August Checklist

  • We have been busy keeping our nursery stock looking its best now that the heat of the summer is here. Hopefully you have had the opportunity to stop in our garden center and take advantage of our sales that have been going on the last number of weeks.
  • We still have a nice selection of colorful annuals if you are still looking for some added color in your containers and yard. All hanging baskets and annual planters are $10.00 off through this month.
  • Week of July 28: We Like it HOT sale begins. We'll give you better sale prices as the temp goes up each day. Just take yesterday's high temp minus 60 and that's the percentage off the next day on all plant material, pottery, fountains, birdbaths and gift items. This sale will go through August 10th.
  • Week of August 11: Flower power sale, all blooming and flowering plants will be 25% off.
  • Fall Sale begins August 25th: Fall is a great time to landscape...all plants will be 20-25% off.

  • Now is the prime time to contact us with your landscape ideas and projects you want done this year. Our designers can get a jump-start on your ideas early so you can relax in the comfort of your finished landscape this summer. We have several design options available to our customers. Please call us at 507-289-3039 for more information.
  • Reduce fertilizer applications to allow perennials, shrubs, and trees ample time to harden off before cold weather.
  • Continue to water during dry spells. Plants shouldn't need deep watering more than twice a week this time of year.
  • Deadhead perennials and annuals to keep the blooms coming.
  • Remove worn-out annuals and veggies and replace with new. Shearing some annuals and perennials back will encourage new growth, giving them a fresh look for fall.
  • Pick apples as soon as they are ready, being careful not to bruise the fruit.
  • As the month grows cooler, seed areas of lawn that are thin or dead. The cool weather encourages fast growth. Keep the seed well watered while it germinates.
  • August is a great time to divide perennials. Place them in new areas of your yard or give them away to friends and neighbors.
  • Gradually move houseplants that have been summering outdoors into shadier locations so they will be prepared for the lower light levels indoors. Make sure they aren't infested with bugs before bringing them inside.
  • Continue watering newly planted perennials, trees, and shrubs. Water deeply to encourage root growth.
  • Avoid pruning rust-prone plants such as mountain ash, and crabapple in late summer and fall because many rusts are releasing spores now.
