  • Pull out annual plants and vegetables as they fade or are killed by frost.
  • Plant colorful fall ornamentals, such as mums, flowering cabbage, and kale.
  • After a hard frost, dig up tuberous tender plants such as begonias for drying and storing over winter.
  • Continue to water the garden during dry spells. Consistent watering in fall helps prepare plants for winter.
  • Cool fall weather is ideal for sowing grass seed and repairing thin patches of lawn.
  • When planting fall bulbs, don't forget to add a little bonemeal to the soil to encourage root development.
  • Move tender container plants into a sheltered location when frost is expected. This strategy will allow you to enjoy them longer.
  • Begin to plant bulbs for a great display next spring.
  • Set up birdfeeders and begin to feed the birds if you didn't do so all summer.
